Architecture as a ‘Safe house’

Earthquakes. Calamities. Natural disasters. Such headlines have been appearing more frequent in recent headlines. Can architecture help prevent damage from these disasters? Can architecture help heal the psychological and physiological trauma of such experiences?

For my thesis I will look into designing ‘calamity proof’ buildings. Shelters that can function on a day-to-day basis with mixed use functions for the community. When needed, it will transform itself into a ‘safe house’, a haven for those to escape and take shelter.

Reusable Olympic Stadium

Every two years, a city invests millions of dollars preparing for either the summer or winter Olympics constructing numbers of facilities in a short period of time. However once the Olympic flame is extinguished, some of these venues become useless and fall into disrepair.

This thesis explores the potential of temporary building material that is inexpensive, readily available and recyclable, particularly in the form of paper as a source of inspiration. Taking paper as key structural material, this project challenges the current construction inertia of using steel and concrete for Olympic venue construction, in attempt to create an architecture that can be easily disassemble and reassemble in subsequent events.
