Nowadays, capitalist like standardize our society appearance and living habit. For instance, Link REIT, the real estate company which manage shopping malls in residential areas, shapes our shopping experience with air-conditioning, high-end interior, glass display panel. However, luxurious equipment implies higher living cost. Local businesses are forced to leave, residents reluctantly visit other markets for cheaper food, cityscape is commercialized. It worth rethinking what is a public housing mall, do we really need air-conditioners in market, marble footsteps when buying daily necessities?
In contrast, a very common mushroom-shape kiosk could be easily found in old public housing estate, and it can be interpreted as a prototype of environmental friendly device. Air buoyancy occurs when kitchen hot exhaust gas flows out from the mushroom head, air pressure then drags the cool air to ventilate the restaurant. It is simple, generic. Yet these kiosks are getting demolished and forgotten by the evolution of urbanization. My thesis aims to redesign the kiosk and public housing mall, to encourage merchant to take advantage of natural resources, maintain suitable living quality yet reduce operation cost, rental cost and living cost.
In Hong Kong nowadays, young generation has growing concern over our own identity and collective memory. We then should consider to amplify the efficiency and evolve our local architectonic instead of blindly following the big trend of international style. Moreover, proper use of other environmental friendly systems and principles, such as stack effect, can also limit the usage of electrical device; simultaneously reducing costs and carbon footprint. Finally, many existing stores are forced to relocate because of the unreasonable rental price. With an efficient way of operating the mall, some existing business can possibly survive and continue to serve local residents.
