Revised thesis abstract (2016-10-23)

Publicly curated architecture

The thesis is about how architecture, as a symbol and as a space, can become a platform for individual expression. Under oppressive governance, subtler pursuits of identity, freedom and democracy are emerging, through street arts such as graffiti, installations, and via social media posts. People desire to be expressive and be seen, at the same time wanting to be anonymous and hidden among a collective.

The thesis will study how postmodern architecture convey meanings through the semiotics of form, spatial organization and material. It will also look into the spatial implications of street arts and the transformations they bring to their contexts.

The project is to create a gallery for the people, as a materialization and exhibition of their individual expressions and perceptions of the city. It shall be a non-hierarchical, customizable and dynamic space curated collectively by the public. Ultimately the architecture aims to serve as a symbol and visualization of the bottom-up forces of society.
