Public bathing dates back to the Greeks and the Romans. With the urban revolution and the development of economy and technology, the living environment around us changes everyday. Nowadays, Maybe public bathing has been a bit outdated, but we can always find some interesting things in this special space.

Jinan is known as the “City of Springs” because of the large number of natural artesian springs. The majority of the springs, many of which have been historically listed under the “72 Famous Springs” are concentrated in the downtown district and flow north to converge in Daming Lake. Spring plays a very important role in local people’s life, not only as a resource for daily lives, but also related to recreational activities.

Springs create space inadvertently that allow people to wash, to swim and to talk with friends. What I want to do for thesis is using the modern architectural language to redefine the unique identity of this space to recall the memory of city. And I think a space is no longer a product which is only give you spatial experience, but also related to other senses, such as smell, hearing, tactile sensation, etc. Focusing on the “spirit of place” which can enhance people’s sense of identity and a sense of belonging, and forming space with memory.
