Smart Geometry 1

The environments and materials we are designing are being embedded with ubiquitous computing capabilities. Furthermore the data generated and gathered is being stored, processed and communicated through increasingly open sharing platforms.

The project aims to find the relationship between physical and virtual world, using polymorphism of geometry and digital parameter processing to achieve multiple-performance capacity of architecture. 2It can be partitioning systems, as well as illumination infrastructures for the interior scale. For the scale of the exterior, it can also be dynamic building facade, massing of the building or pedestrian infrastructure. It contains three part:

1. OUTPUT

The geometry of architecture not only affects program and function inside, but also matters the performance of the building. Through study of form, materials and structure of specific prototype, treat these elements as complex interrelations in polymorphic systems resulting from the response to varied input and environmental influences to optimize the performance of geometry.

2. Digital Processing

Based on different purpose, using specific algorithm to build relationship between raw physical data from sensor and parameters for output to change the status of geometry. 5

3. IMPUT

Using different sensor to get data from physical world as seeds for form finding.

Mind Wall, Tseng Li-Ling(GSD 2014)

In the middle of 20 century, computer was employed by architects for the first time primarily to maximize the efficiency of model production. Meanwhile, Eero Saarinen using early structural-analysis software designed the concrete shells of his TWA terminal. During 1970s, computer were more widely used as an aiding tool of design(CAD) and it has in terms of three eras: the 2D drafting ear, the BIM era and the design computation era. 6

With the help of computation, Architecture now is become a medium taking input from our natural physical world through various sensors and  then process these imputed data with different algorithms and finally output the orders to actuators to enhance the performance of architecture. In the project MIND.WALL by Ling-li Tseng, an installation project using signals received from the sensing device to transform the shape of the wall and the different physical states of the wall would affect human’s invisible mental state.

Beside optimize specific function dynamically through a kinetic surface, I wanna

apply this process of interaction between physical and virtual to a lager scale of design by which architecture itself become a machine with intelligence, it knows how to optimize its program organization, atrium size  through transit between different state of geometry.
