Border

Border artifact

Border Atlas
The methodology of this thesis is Mediating. My thesis focuses on the borders that includes
many types such as geography, politic or society with different physical forms such as wall,
river or military isolation. Those regions usually have complicate situation of confrontation and
cooperation based on the politic, society and economy.
In those regions, the boundary is a very important element to connect or separate different parts.
It likes a critical intermediary which combines different issues. So I propose the architecture
“paradoxical boundary” for different kinds of borders based on complex situation.

border how

There will be three sites for the design tests. Each site will mainly focuses on one main issue or
prototype. The site of India provide a case of encaves which is about the interaction between two
parts. The site of Europe will provide a case of refugee which is about the population mobility
crossing the boundary. Finally, I will try to propose a integrated border system combing those
design tests.
India–Bangladesh enclaves
Within the main body of Bangladesh were 102 enclaves of Indian territory, which in turn contained
21 Bangladeshi counter-enclaves, one of which contained an Indian counter-counter-enclave –
the world’s only third-order enclave. This interesrting situation provide a good basement for the
missing border design test.
Conflict Border: Korean Demilitarized Zone
It is the most heavily militarized border in the world. The Northern Limit Line, or NLL, is the
disputed maritime demarcation line between North and South Korea in the Yellow Sea, not agreed
in the armistice. The coastline and islands on both sides of the NLL are also heavily militarized. It
is for the conflict border design test.
Refugee to Europe
The mobility of refugees present the mobility of population crossing the border. In this situation,
border should bout be the barrier. But it is also nor possible without any border. So, Border here
becaome a paradoxical element. The meaning of border will be very signficant for the issue.

border why

Exodus, or the voluntary prisoners of architecture – OMA – 1972

“The Wall was a masterpiece. It is an intervention designed to create a new urban culture
invigorated by architectural innovation and political subversion.”
A Field of Walls – Dogma – 2012
A Field of Walls explores how the politics embedded in the etchings are not a function of forms but
of walls, and reconsider the power of relations its deploys.
Stop City – Dogma – 2007
By assuming the form of the border that separates urbanization from empty space, Stop City is
proposed as the absolute limit, and thus, as the very form of the city.
Cities Between Cities – FCHA – 2013
They propose the Utopia vision that some certain micro-cities in the check point between cities will
combine the two cities and solve the problems.
The cases show the different situation of borders. The boundary in complex modern society is in a
paradoxical situation. The boundary also should balance the isolation and dialogue.

what

I will research on the border via atlas and design tests in different situation. The research and
design scale comprises region, urban and architecture. And the thesis will also deal with the
issues of politic, economy, society and architecture.
Step01: Border Research
Research on the border prototype via atlas, situation of different parts beside the border, the
population mobility crossing the border. Case study of the projects and sites.
Step02: Design test
Missing Border: MiIndia–Bangladesh enclaves; Conflict Border: Korean Demilitarized Zone
Step03: Design test
Paradoxical Border: Europe Border with refugee issue. With the above design tests, I will propose
the integrated system with different scales including region, urban and architecture. In different
scales there are different proposals and designs.
Step04: Production
Specific architectural design in a integrated paradoxical boundary system.
