Openings started to be discussed form the modernist architecture movement, since it plays as the important role in the composition of space. In the present, it become more popular for its cross-boundary intervention in contemporary art.The thesis interested in how the openings help to create the rich and mysterious space.
The thesis project will be in architecture scale, based on the analysis of case studies, trying to create intergrated space from the organization of openings. The program will be the bathhouse. The ideal site will be in boundary place between city and natural area.
Bathhouse gives the impression of the dispersion of air, which provides opportunity for the equality and diffusion of space. When openings become the main method to organize each volume, it will help space communion with each other. On the other hand, bathhouse provides another important element, water, which represents nature and continuity, which corresponded both to the character of space and the site.

Openings play as an important role in architecture elements, which possess basic function character, such as the door for entry or exit, the window for light and ventilation. Since nineteenth century, when space is discussed as a volume, openings, as the partition and connection of space, started to possess spatial meaning. Architect such as Adolf Loos, organized room with different levels, the openings inbetween make the space rich and much more fascinating.

Nowadays, more and more people started to interested in the mysterious space formed by organizing openings, both in architecture and contemporary art field. Opening participates in the partition and connection of space. The change of the size transforms the urban or architectural scale of the building, such as architecture by Go Hasegawa; the position of the opening challenge the conventional experience of space, such as the painting by Edward Hopper; the height of it blurry the boundary of inside and outside, like architecture by Diener&Diener.

What I interested in is how the openings display in Chinese traditional garden, I find the openings here adjust sensitively in scale, position, height, which bring an opportunity to observe the inside(room) and outside(nature). How this modern space lauguage exists in Estern context hundreds years ago? Can it bring new perspective backwards to modern spacial meaning of openings? The thesis will try to explore more by the abstraction and the comparative observation.

Model is always the efficient way to test the space. The most important method I will take is by making physical model. The study will be mainly devided into following stages:

Dec 17: Case study. Using conceptual model (1:50) to observe the opening
in traditional garden.
Review 01: Architectural scale(1:100 or 1:50). Deeper analysis of case study. Drawing
to show the experience how the space become larger than the acual size.
Review 02: Architectural scale(1:100 or 1:50). “Fragment” design of the opening. Start
to test the method of organization on “Fragment”.
Review 03: Architectural scale(1:50). Keep testing and make sure of the organization
method. Develope into detail scale.
