Summary Statement:
This thesis is to design a Foldable Bamboo Architecture which should be lightweight, foldable ,durable, strong, and be transported easily and installed quickly.
The new design will be inspired by the logic of origami which will be connected to the computation. It exlore the techinical how to make the bamboo structure foldable.

WHAT

what

The aim of this thesis is to design a Foldable Bamboo Architecture. It is a different structural typology which constitute of bamboo as the main flexible structure. Inspired by the origami, the structure should be lightweight, foldable ,durable, strong, and be transported easily and installed quickly.

The site I chose is a county named AnJi which located near to Shanghai. It is a famous tourist country and famous for its beautiful landscape of bamboo that can be found all over the mountains. In addition, Anji is also famous for its production of bamboo such as the artifact of bamboo and bamboo board. They have become one of the important financial resources of the government. Anji attracts More and more tourist from the everywhere who want to enjoy the country life. In the busy season, Lots of museum, hotels and restaurant are need to serve the tourist. While in the off-peak season, these kind of architecture will be vacant. For this reason, the architecture should be flexible so suit different situation.

Therefore, the foldable bamboo architecture could be a flexible architecture which become the temporary hotel or the house in the places of interest. They could be transported by truck easily and become a new image of the bamboo mountains.

WHY

why

In the last hundreds of years, there are many different kinds of traditional technical way to deal with the bamboo. Most of time, bamboo was treated as a material for poor people.

While recently, realizing the potential of bamboo as renewable resource while the wood is becoming scarcer, some architects such as Doug La Barre,
Oscar Hidalgo and Silmon Velez have explored more and more new possibilities of bamboo.

While talking about origami structure, which would be useful in many engineering and everyday applications, such as robotic arm, construction crane or pop-up furniture. Paulino sees particular potential for quick-assembling emergency shelters, bridges and other infrastructure in the wake of a natural disaster. “Origami became more of an objective for engineering and a science just in the last five years or so,” Filipov says.

Although the bamboo is a kind of flexible material, the bamboo structural system is not really flexible. Therefore, I would like to introduce the advantage of origami system into the technical of bamboo and combine them together to generate a really flexible architecture.

Design Methodology

1.Study the logic of the origami and character of bamboo.
By Review 1.0. The completion works will include the study about the logic of origami by computer (grosshopper) and the basic character of bamboo structure such as the bending, strength, joint and so on.

2.Study the property of bamboo.
By Review 2.0, the completion works will include how to introduce the logic of origami into the real bamboo structure, texting some joints and technical to make the bamboo foldable.

3.Study the program of foldable bamboo sturcture
By Review 3.0, the completion works will expand the technical of the foldble bamboo structural system into a real program such as the foldable hotel, museum and so on.
